Reading a notification takes 3 seconds. Finding what I'd been doing before those 3 seconds took minutes. I multiplied those minutes by the number of times per day, and then I cleaned up my notifications. The math scared me.
A notification's cost isn't the 3 seconds of reading. It's the time spent returning to the original task afterward. Studies observing office interruptions report cases where fully returning takes over 20 minutes on average, and in one experiment, just the sound of an unchecked notification was enough to shake task performance. At 50 notifications a day, the recovery time alone runs to hours. The fix has two parts: fewer notifications, and hours they can't reach.
There are studies that observed people working in offices. One research team reported that after an interruption, fully returning to the original task frequently took over 20 minutes on average. That number bundles all interruptions, colleagues' questions and calls included, and the return trip commonly detoured through two or three other tasks first. So one notification doesn't bill exactly 20 minutes, but the direction agrees across studies: the cost of the interruption lives after the interruption.

In one experiment, participants worked a focus task while notifications were sent to their phones. They were told not to check, and they didn't. Yet the ones whose phones sounded or buzzed made more errors than the ones whose phones stayed silent. Wondering what the notification was, all by itself, leaked the attention out. This is the difference between silent mode and notifications actually off.
I felt the difference when I turned vibration off. Vibration-only, the phone would shudder once on the desk, and the wondering ended with me checking. No vibration, nothing to wonder about.
Nobody has the exact number, but the rough shape is available. Fifty notifications a day, half of them checked, an average of five minutes to fully return each time, conservatively: over two hours. In practice the unchecked ones shave a little too, so it's larger. One notification is small. A day of notifications is not.
One thing is missing from that math: the quality of the work done during recovery. In the minutes of returning, we don't stop working. We work shallowly: rereading the same line, deleting the sentence just written, hunting for where we were. That shallow work logs as work on the timesheet and leaves nothing behind. The real cost of notifications isn't vanished time. It's time gone shallow.

Silent mode only removes the sound. With vibration left, every shudder raises the question. Human contact gets a sound, everything else gets no signal at all: that's the setting the experiments point to.
However far you cut, something remains. So set one or two hours a day when the phone lives in another room, and put the work that needs focus inside them. Most of the notification problem dissolves there.
