Does your phone hurt focus just by sitting there?
What the study really found

I was startled by an article saying a powered-off phone nearby makes you dumber. Then I found the original study and read it, and it was saying something far more careful than the article. Here's the sorted version: what was found, and what wasn't.

The short answer

There is a study finding that a silenced phone on the desk went with lower scores on attention-demanding tasks. But the effect was clearest in people who depend heavily on their phones, and follow-up studies sometimes found it small or absent. What can be said with confidence stops at this: a visible phone takes a share of attention. That it makes you dumber, or hits everyone alike, is not what the research said. The application is simple either way: when focus matters, put the phone out of sight.

What did the study find?

Several hundred participants worked attention-demanding tasks with their phones in one of three places: on the desk, in a pocket or bag, or in another room. All phones silenced, none in use. Scores ran highest with the phone in another room and lowest with it on the desk. Asked whether they had thought about their phones, participants said no, and the pattern held anyway. The researchers' reading: a nearby phone spends part of your attention on ignoring it. And they reported the effect was larger in people who described themselves as heavily dependent on their phones.

How did the follow-up studies come out?

The same design has been rerun. Some studies found similar results. Others found the effect small, or couldn't find a statistically meaningful difference. That doesn't mean the original was wrong. It means the effect varies by person and situation and isn't large: a common story in psychology, and the reason no single study gets to settle a question.

The summary: that a visible phone takes a share of attention is a direction multiple studies agree on. How large, and for whom, is still being sorted out. For someone like me, on the heavily dependent end, the odds run higher.

So what happens at my desk?

I ran the test myself: the same work with the phone on the desk and with it in another room. The time came out similar, but with the phone away, I reread far fewer lines. The research speaks carefully. My desk had an opinion.

A careful study doesn't change the to-do. Large effect or small, moving the phone costs nothing, while leaving it on the desk on the strength of a null result earns nothing. The studies argue over how much. They don't argue over which way.

What to check when reading research headlines

What was measured

Focus is a wide word. The original study measured specific memory and problem-solving tasks, which don't stand in for all focus. When an article says focus and stops there, it's worth finding what the task actually was.

Who was measured

How large it was

Statistically significant and large are different claims. When an article's numbers run big, check the paper's effect size. It's almost always smaller than the article.
